This program is a response to National Statistics on Stunting and Malnutrition. In fact, the
percentage of stunted children under the age of 5 dropped from 38 per cent to 33 per cent in the
last five years, according to the Rwanda Demographic Health Survey 2019/2020. The survey
results showed that 36% of children in rural areas were stunted compared to 20% in urban
areas (DHS Rwanda, 2020).
of households’ members and communities.
Our program focuses the first 1000 days of a child, but also beyond that period. It is obvious that
the time from the first day of pregnancy up to two years has a profound impact on a child’s
ability to grow, learn and thrive. However, life beyond this period is also very important to the
growth and overall development of a child. Not caring for this period can make children to fall in
malnutrition and cost governments billions to remedy the issue that should have been
foreseeable and prevented. It is why Spirit of Peace and Solidarity (SPS) is investing in nutrition
and well-being of mothers, babies, toddlers, preschoolers, as well as children from rural settings
who run the risk of falling in malnutrition. To have our ends met, we work with health facilities
and parents in the mainland Western Districts as well as in the Islands such as Nkombo, and
Gihaya in Lake Kivu.
